At Mackays, we craft our authentic preserves using hand-picked strawberries, raspberries, and blackcurrants grown in the fertile berry fields of eastern Scotland.
Scotland’s naturally temperate climate allows fruits to ripen slowly, intensifying their flavour and sweetness – a key to the rich taste in every jar of Mackays fruit preserves.

• Blackcurrants are powerful “superfruits,” packed with over 300% of the daily recommended Vitamin C and a wealth of antioxidants.

• The Tayside region alone produces more than 15,000 tonnes of raspberries every year.

• Elsanta, a popular UK strawberry variety, is prized for its vibrant orange-red hue and juicy sweetness – perfect for our classic strawberry jam.

Mackays marmalades are made exclusively with bitter Seville oranges sourced from Spain – the birthplace of traditional marmalade. For our preserves, we use only whole berries to capture the full fruit flavour in every spoonful.

Fun Facts:

• Seville oranges, with their thick skin and naturally high pectin levels, are ideal for marmalade – helping achieve that perfect set.

• These oranges date back to the 12th century and were once the only oranges available in Europe.

• In Mexico, Seville oranges are enjoyed sliced, salted, and spiced with chilli – a bold twist on a citrus classic.

• The Seville orange season is short, running from mid-January to February – a golden window for marmalade enthusiasts.

Traditional Craftsmanship with Copper Pan Cooking
Our preserves and marmalades are cooked the traditional way – in steam-heated copper pans using a rolling boil. This slow cooking process releases the full fruit flavour and helps preserve its natural texture and colour.

Why copper? It’s the ultimate conductor of heat, ensuring even cooking and perfect results every time. Our pans are made locally near Dundee, supporting Scottish craftsmanship and heritage.
